Derechos (y beneficios) de autor

Internet y las nuevas tecnologías avanzan a un paso inalcanzable en muchos sentidos. El móvil último modelo o el microportátil más pequeño sólo te duran un par de semanas antes de que vuelva a salir lo más de lo más, y así hasta el infinito o hasta el fondo del bolsillo (que si crees que es infinito es porque quizá lo tengas roto). De igual forma, la posibilidades de la red hacen camino -que diría Machado- y nos conducen por vericuetos que hasta hace muy poco hubiéramos sido incapaces de soñar. Hete aquí que nos topamos con los libros electrónicos.
La verdad es que yo aún no me veo pasando páginas sin tocar papel, pero tampoco digo que no llegue algún día el momento. Ahora bien, es muy necesario que se clarifiquen las cosas con respecto a los derechos creativos y el derecho social a que la cultura llegue al pueblo. "La cultura engendra progreso y sin ella no cabe exigir de los pueblos ninguna conducta moral", decía el mexicano José Vasconcelos. Pero hay que buscar el equilibrio entre que el artista coma de su obra y esa accesibilidad a la cultura por parte de todos.
En fin, no tenemos mucho tiempo para pararnos a pensar o el tren de las tecnologías nos arrollará de nuevo. Tal vez el artículo de Carlos Herrera en XLSemanal del pasado domingo os sirva de ayuda.

Los bulos de Internet

Son ya varios conocidos los que me han enviado un sospechoso correo advirtiéndome de los posibles efectos secundarios de Actimel y otros productos. A mí me gusta contrastar siempre la información, más ahora en los cibertiempos que corren. Ya no se lleva la mentira, es mucho más fácil usar bulos. Hay quienes pasan su tiempo libre inventando historias o reutilizando fotos que encuentran por la red para contar chistes, chismes o llamar hijoputa de forma sutil al vecino de enfrente. Por eso, yo de internet ya no me creo ni mi password.
No obstante, he de admitir las muchas ventajas que tiene la www; entre otras muchas, la de quitar la razón al que cree tenerla y no la lleva, o la de desmentir lo que no es cierto. Espero que no os lo toméis mal aquellos que me habéis enviado alguna vez un bulo de éstos. Mis palabras no pretenden ser un tirón de orejas, sino un consejo de amigo. No son buenos tiempos para creerse al primer fulano que abra la boca.
Ah, y con respecto al bulo sobre Actimel, echadle un vistazo a este blog y sus enlaces. Es verdad que Danone, como cualquier otra empresa, vende sus productos con un poco de cuento, pero está claro que no es la única.

Once in my English class

... or ONCE in my life. Any of these titles would perfectly suit the set of activities about ONCE (2007, Academy Award winner for best song) I have prepared for my 3º ESO students this year. You'll see it is a good bet: your students won't probably tell you, but in the end they'll love the movie so they'll also work on it with a little more enthusiasm than usually. The formula proposed by Irish director John Carney is very simple: two people, no more than 90 minutes, a few instruments and a bunch of good songs without a single false note. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova make the story quite believable, too.
First of all, you can work a silent viewing activity with the trailer. Then, taking into account the remarkable soundtrack, you can work with any of the lyrics. I have prepared a simple activity with the most famous and acclaimed song "Falling slowly". I prefer "Lies", for example, but you know that I seldom use my favorite stuff in the ELT class in order to avoid any possible personal disappointment. To finish with pre-viewing activities, you can give your students some pictures of key moments of the movie so that they can try to guess the plot.
I wouldn´t give the students too much work for the viewing itself because the movie has got a lot of things to enjoy (and they will, no doubt), just some questions to think about and comment after watching it. And at the end, depending on the kind of students you have, you may encourage them to shoot a video based on the story.
I've had a good time myself preparing the movie for my students and seeing the result.

Warned by Jefferson two centuries ago

Two centuries ago, the third President of the USA Thomas Jefferson warned us about the global economic crisis we are facing nowadays. His words were so prophetic that I am surprised we couldn't avoid such a slump:

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation then by deflation, the banks and the corporations will grow up around them, will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

Ya decía Thomas Jefferson hace dos siglos que una nación no podía esperar ser ignorante y libre al mismo tiempo. Puesto que la crisis económica pone en duda nuestra absoluta libertad, no me queda más remedio que considerar seriamente nuestra ignorancia, aunque me avergüence de ello.

Sus proféticas palabras van más allá a la hora de referirse al caos financiero que nos asola. Juzgad por vosotros mismos.

Aprender inglés en el lejano oeste

Sé que han vuelto a salir procesiones este año, pero sólo he visto alguna en la tele. Los niños pequeños (los míos, al menos) se lo pasan mejor viendo animales salvajes y jugando a indios y vaqueros, así que nos fuimos al minihollywood de Tabernas en Almería, donde pasamos un día inolvidable.
Entre risas y fotos volví a encontrarme en una esquina con uno de esos carteles que pasan desapercibidos para la mayoría y que a mí me gusta desafiar para la posteridad: Spitting on sidewalks prohibited. Penalty $5 to $100.
(Anyway, I promise it was only a funny pose because I hate spitting.) Los que no sepan lo que significa, diccionario. ¡Qué mejor sitio que el lejano oeste para aprender un poco de inglés!

NO SURRENDER, best performance ever!

Cuando hace mal tiempo y todos en casa duermen la siesta, youtube es una gran opción si te gusta la música en directo; es un pasatiempo como otro cualquiera. Hay conciertos irrepetibles a los que uno ya no podrá ir, y éste es uno de ellos: VOTE FOR CHANGE, 13 de octubre de 2004 en el Continental Airlines Arena de East Rutherford, Nueva Jersey. Bruce Springsteen, acompañado por su inseparable E Street Band, tocó con Jackson Browne y Eddie Vedder entre otros, y con éste último interpretó una apabullante versión de NO SURRENDER que bien puede estar ya en el olimpo del rock. Esta inolvidable versión tenía que aparecer en mi blog, así que la dejo colgada para siempre al final de mi página.
